Background of the Study

Religion in Nigeria, particularly in northern regions like Zuru LGA in Kebbi State, plays a pivotal role in shaping political participation and influencing electoral outcomes. The intersection of religious beliefs with political choices creates a unique dynamic in local governance. Zuru LGA, with its diverse religious demographics, showcases the significant influence of religious values on voter behavior and political mobilization (Dahiru & Abdullahi, 2023). This study seeks to examine how religion affects political participation in Zuru LGA, investigating the extent to which religious affiliation influences voting patterns, political engagement, and candidate preferences.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The impact of religion on political participation in Zuru LGA remains a subject of significant interest, as religious leaders and institutions often play a critical role in shaping the political attitudes of their followers. However, despite its importance, there is limited research that explores the depth of religious influence on political behavior at the local government level in Zuru LGA. This study will fill this gap by analyzing the ways religion impacts political participation and voter preferences in the area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the influence of religion on political participation in Zuru LGA.

  2. To explore the relationship between religious leaders and political mobilization in Zuru LGA.

  3. To assess the impact of religious values on voting patterns in local elections in Zuru LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does religion influence political participation in Zuru LGA?

  2. What role do religious leaders play in political mobilization in Zuru LGA?

  3. To what extent do religious beliefs shape voting behavior and political preferences in Zuru LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Religion significantly influences political participation in Zuru LGA.

  2. Religious leaders play a critical role in mobilizing voters in Zuru LGA.

  3. Religious values significantly shape the political preferences of voters in Zuru LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the broader understanding of how religion intersects with politics in northern Nigeria, particularly within the context of local governance. It will provide valuable insights for political leaders, policy makers, and civil society organizations seeking to understand the religious dynamics of political participation in Zuru LGA (Usman & Nuhu, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the impact of religion on political participation in Zuru LGA, specifically during the 2023 election cycle. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining data on the influence of informal religious networks and potential biases in responses from religious leaders and voters.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Political Participation: The involvement of individuals in political processes, including voting, campaigning, and engaging in political discussions.

  • Religious Influence: The impact of religious beliefs, institutions, and leaders on political behavior and decision-making.

  • Voting Behavior: The patterns and choices made by voters during elections, often influenced by personal, social, and cultural factors, including religion.
